Our Story
Our journey began in 1994. It was then that my mother, Regina Schulze-Boysen, a German expatriate who had made Bali her home since 1980, founded Bodyworks, Bali’s first day spa. During a time when beach massages were the only option, Regina dared to dream differently. She envisioned a place that offered a more luxurious alternative, a sanctuary dedicated to rejuvenation and relaxation. Our first location on Jl Raya Seminyak was quaint yet charming, a humble space that radiated character. It featured a handful of massage rooms, a single facial bed, and a few salon chairs. Star lamps twinkled whimsically above the oddly-shaped bathtubs, mosaic-glass framed mirrors added a dash of twinkle, and playful
terrazzo colors danced across the room. Here, Bodyworks first breathed life.
The unique charm of the place, coupled with exceptional service, quickly captured the hearts of both locals and visitors alike. Word-of-mouth worked its magic, and we swiftly outgrew our primary location. The time had come for expansion.
Regina built our second location amongst the then-remote fields and coconut groves of Petitenget, with the iconic La Lucciola as our only neighbour. As an avid traveller,
she drew inspiration from an Indian love of vibrant colours and archways and a Morrocan love of courtyards and patterns. The result was a salon and fifteen treatment
rooms dotted around a river stone courtyard with a magnificent frangipani tree as its centerpiece. This became our home for the next 21 wonderful years.
With an array of offerings like the 'mandi lulur' or exfoliation massage, Bodyworks transformed newcomers into regulars. Even amidst the rapid development of the island and the emergence of new competitors, we continued to be a trusted household name for wellness.
In 2016, a new chapter began with my arrival into the company. Returning to Bali from studying overseas, I joined the Bodyworks team, marking the beginning of a special mother-
daughter partnership. Together, my mother and I carried forward the legacy of Bodyworks, having a lot of fun along the way.
2019 marked a sudden wave of dramatic change. The looming end of our land lease and an unreasonable asking price for extension led to a difficult decision - it was time to move
out of the place that Bodyworks had called home for over two decades. We faced the tough choice of either closing down the company or fighting for the Bodyworks dream.
Eventually we chose to continue, driven by the love for our craft and our team who we consider family. We quickly found new land nearby, and with our dear friend and architect Selin Maner, we designed Bodyworks 3.0.
The building journey was not without its challenges, with the pandemic hitting halfway through our build - it was a time rife with uncertainty and doubt, but also of newfound strength and resilience.
We opened our doors once again in December 2020, amid the depths of Covid, and were humbled to receive enthusiastic support from our domestic clientele, which allowed us to not only survive, but also to continue to grow until international borders reopened.
Almost 3 years down the road, we are delighted and incredibly grateful to welcome you into our new home - one that was built with love and devotion. Thank you for coming, we hope you feel at home here too.
